Cristina Von Sperling Afridi - Observer

Cristina is a Brazilian, whose adopted home is Pakistan living in Islamabad for the past 20 years. She is an accomplished equestrian, environmentalist, an ex-restaurateur, philanthropist, interior designer and a diplomat’s wife.

In recognition of her role in promoting Brazil’s friendship with Pakistan, she was decorated with the prestigious award Damme of  ‘the Order of Rio Branco’ by the Government of Brazil. 

She is married to Ambassador (Retd) Tariq Khan Afridi, who has served as Ambassador of Pakistan to Brazil, Jordan, Portugal and Libya.

Shattered by the death of her only child, Cristina has responded to the tragedy by forming the Karim Khan Afridi Welfare Foundation. Its purpose, to give direction to the youth of Pakistan: to sensitize them to the dangers of drugs, instill in them a sense of responsibility towards the environment and society, and give them opportunities to participate in competitive sports. With Islamabad’s environment increasingly threatened by developers, she has also emerged as a leading voice in the movement to save Islamabad as a member of Green Force. 
The Foundation and Cristina are active member of the civil Society are the pioneers on Drug Awareness campaign, today goes around Pakistan visiting Educational Institutions giving talks to the students and helping youth identify, understand and manage emotions during their adolescent years.
She has attended and participated in the following International Conferences/Session:

  • Twice attended the UN General Assembly Special Session on world drug problem in New York in 2016. The contributions of KKAWF are available on official website of UNODC.
  • Regional Conference with 7 Countries in Tehran – July 2016.
  • The Sixtieth session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), Vienna, March 2017.
  • The CND Inter-sessional meeting on supply reduction, law enforcement, responses to drug related crime with intervention in Vienna, October 2017.
  • The first ‘Parliamentarians Against Drugs’ conference at Moscow in Dec 2017.
  • The 61st Session of the CND & UNODC in Vienna, March 2018.
  • The Post-UNGASS session in Vienna, October 2018.
  • The 62nd Session of the CND at Vienna (March 14 – 18, 2019). Was a Speaker representing Civil Society, at the Side Event “Strengthening Efforts to Prevent Drug Abuse in Educational Settings”.
  • Speaker at the Annual Board Meeting of INCB Civil Society Hearing on the topic of ‘Young People and Drugs’ held at Vienna on 8th May, 2019.z
  • Speaker at the International Drug Rehabilitation Forum 2019 – Kunming China, June 2019.
  • Speaker at the International Society of Green Crescent’s ‘FIRST ISTANBUL INITIATIVE’ at Istanbul – Turkey, Oct 2019.

The Foundation collaborates with UNODC and Anti Narcotic Forces ANF Pakistan.
